The monastery of St. Andrew

The small church of St. Andrew is located 27km north of Agios Nikolaos town, near the village of Finokalia.
It has been built inside a cave, a little higher than the rocky coastline, amidst a grove of pines, at the site of the old monastery of St. Andrew.
The entrance of the church leads into the cave where the temple is located.
The belfry of the church bears the inscription “Donated by the lepers of Spinalonga”.
Near the church there are few cells and the grave of G. Lamprakis (1839-1914), who restored the church in 1850 and lived there as a hermit until his death.
To reach the monastery from Agios Nikolaos town, follow the New National road (E75) towards Heraklion, to the north-west.
After about 13km, take the exit to Neapoli, drive past the villages of Kourounas, Nofalias, Dilakos, Koudoulamos and Agios Nikolaos and follow the signs leading to the church.
