The Monastery of Afendis Christos

The Monastery of Afendis Christos (Lord Christ), was built on the second highest peak of the sacred mountain of the Minoans, Yukhtas, granting magical views to the bay of Heraklion.
It is dedicated to the Transfiguration (August 6), Agia Zoni (31 August), the Holy Apostles (30 June) and Agioi Anargyroi (July 1).
It celebrates on August 6.

Today, from the abandoned monastery survives only the four-aisled temple.
The interior of the church has only got icons, no frescoes.
1443, the date of its completion, is carved in a stone at the entrance.

The monastery was well-known to travelers throughout the Venetian rule.
At that time visitors were passing through Crete on their way to the Holy Land, looking around Yukhtas for the place where the ancients placed the tomb of Zeus.

The monastery can be accessed through dirt road from Archanes.
