Red beach

Red beach or Kokkini Ammos in Greek is located 68km south west of Heraklion city and 800m south of famous Matala.
Like the touristy resort of Matala it used to be a favorite destination for the hippies back in the 70’s and has been voted as one of the top nudism friendly beaches in the world.

There is only one canteen which might be closed and few umbrellas that can be unavailable by the time you arrive.
There are a few tamarisk trees close to the canteen.

Its stunning surroundings are protected under the Natura 2000 program.
As its name reveals the beach features reddish sand.
The waters have a blue-green colour and are exposed to the westerly winds which blow quite often in the south west coast of Heraklion.
Therefore it is highly suggested that you take all the necessary goods before you depart.
In its northern part you will be able to admire carved sculptures of Minoan and Egyptian sea figures, works of a Belgian fan of Matala.

How to get to Red beach

Red beach is accessible with a small boat from Matala.
If you feel like hiking, follow a trail which starts just north of Matala and crosses the hill north of the village.
After walking for about 15-25 minutes you will see the Red beach from above, an absolutely stunning view.
