Fodele beach

Location

Fodele beach lies 29km west of Heraklion and 53km east of Rethymnon, near the resort of Agia Pelagia.
The homonymous village is located 3km southwest of the beach, and is the birthplace of the famous painter DoménikosTheotokopoulos, (1541- 7 April 1614), widely known as El Greco.

Notes

Fodele consists of two sandy beaches, separated by the river Pantomantris or Fodelianos.

*The western beach is very well organized and less affected by the north winds than the eastern one which offers no facilities and is much quieter.

The scenic village of Fodele features the house and Museum of Dominicos Theotokopoulos, Byzantine churches and the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon and is well worth a visit.

How to get to Fodele beach

If you choose to drive from Heraklion, take the new National road (E75) towards Rethymnon, to the west.
The road passes beside the beach.
Fodele beach is also accessible from Heraklion with public buses during the summer months.
