Notes

The main sandy beach is located east of the village, next to the small harbor.
This gently shelving beach is right opposite a steep mountain which protects it from the winds.
The beach has shallow waters and resembles a lagoon.

The above distinctive mountain gained international recognition in 1964 when the beach was used as a set for the filming of the famous syrtaki dance in the awarded movie “Zorba the Greek”, starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates.

The second sandy beach of Stavros is about 200m northwest of the main beach.
The seabed is rocky and is relatively quieter.

The two beaches are separated by an ancient quarry which may have been used to provide stone to build the monasteries of Akrotiri.

How to reach Stavros

Stavros is accessible from Chania with public buses.
